Free Tools For Comic Book Artists

The color tone you choose for your comic should be unique, eye-catching, and always remain consistent to the comic, or you will confuse readers. It works best when you have a branded color scheme so that the reader can distinguish and recognise the comic book amongst other novels. Truth be told, yes, you should judge a book by its cover, especially when it comes to comic book covers. Read this tutorial to learn some rules for designing a stand-out cover for your graphic novels. Traditionally a gutter is always the same width, which implies a fairly smooth transition from panel to panel with no accent or alteration to the reading. A wider panel border, leaving the reader more time and space to rest and think about the story can be a nice option for creating time in-between moments.

Cinematic Storytelling: The 100 Most Powerful Film Conventions Every Filmmaker Must Know by Jennifer van Sijll

If you’re collaborating with an artist on making your comic book, you may need to tweak the way you’ve scripted to make sure they have everything they need. It’s good to bring an artist on board as early as possible (which we’ll discuss more in the next section) so that you can keep them in mind while scripting. Most contemporary writers go with the panel-by-panel script, which is best if you have a clear, specific vision for your comic book. However, if you’re flexible on the details and would like some room to improvise, then the page-by-page option might be better. In plot-style scripts, the writer will describe the action of the scene in the present tense. So when writing a traditionally-formatted comic for the digital market, consider keeping things simple — if only for the sake of your readers’ eyesight.

Choose the format your story needs (or the one it deserves)

When creating your panels, think about what you want to convey to the reader and how you want to develop your story using different panel shots. Don’t let too much time pass in-between issues, though — you’ll want to be timely with your releases so that your story doesn’t lose momentum. Between editions, keep your fans engaged using social media, and share teasers from upcoming installments to keep your work fresh in readers’ minds. Comic strips offer a unique and creative way to engage readers, express ideas, and explore storytelling through the power of visuals and words. Also the size of the panel can change the atmosphere of the comic. Having a very long panel with lots of space can make the pace feel slow. Having several small panels next to each other can make it feel as if things are happening fast. For this tutorial I will only cover the first page of the comic. Although it is short and simple, I still write down a script for myself.

Step 10

It is often taught in film theory, but can be applied to comics just as well. That way the camera can move around from one side to the next without us losing track of which character is which. The left character will appear on the left side every time, even if the camera is in front of or behind them.

You've drawn out the panels, added text, and you're comic just needs to be colored. Again, stick to your Character Designs to make sure everything is consistent. This is possibly the most fun part of the whole process.

Step 1

Try drawing the actions from your script using simple stick figures. Do not worry about making it look good—what is important is that your story can be understood in pictures just as well as in written form. This is the first time an Xbox Series X has been wrapped by a comic book, Microsoft said. And in now Microsoft tradition, it’s only available as part of a limited-time sweepstakes hosted on Xbox Twitter.

What is really neat is how you can modify the comic panel quite easily by using clipping masks like this. With the Direct Selection Tool, drag-select one of the anchor points of the mask. Once the inking is done I select all the panel content vector paths, not including the frame border. I deselect the group, either by pressing Command-Shift-A or by left-clicking somewhere outside the selection.

Choose from a range of formats

When you are done, group everything inside the panel together with Command-G, or right-click and choose Group from the dropdown menu. This one has a wavy border to show that it is a fantasy taking place. With Illustrator there is an easy way to achieve this effect. I added five on each long side and two on each short side.

This will help your reader differentiate between the narrator & character dialogue. Captions are not the same as thought or speech bubbles (we will cover more about those in the next section). Captions will have a different tone compared to character dialogue, which helps separate them from other text within the comic. Use captions to narrate your comic book and give more description to the reader of what is happening in the scene. Typically, captions will be in a colored outlined rectangle box within the comic.

Keep in mind the cover scene on a superhero comic will likely differ from that on a detective series, fantasy narrative, or horror comic. A good cover illustration needs to fit the genre and overall mood of the story, whether the goal is creating mystery, portraying courage, or showing a diverse cast of characters. So, choose the who and what of your cover scene carefully. A comic strip is a sequential art form that tells a story through a series of illustrated panels.

A great comic book will hook your readers with a balanced comic layout, flow, and structure. To create an engaging composition, consider all the comic book elements and how you can use them to enhance your story and create a visually stimulating layout for your reader. You may have done a little storyboarding in the writing stage, but it’s good to sketch out your entire comic book before you proceed.
